THE METHOD

This is a zero waste pattern which is designed to be drawn directly onto your fabric. Pieces are broken up into simple blocks which can be modified easily to change lengths, add/remove different design elements and accommodate changing fabric widths. It comes with some simple hacks at the end which are intended to be a guide so you can start experimenting further using this pattern.

Zero Waste Gather Dress.

This 15 page pattern booklet contains a mixture of hand drawn and digital illustrations and diagrams, templates and step by step sewing instructions.

An additional FREE tutorial for creating a gathered sleeve for this style is available here.

Metric System : Centimetres and A4 paper size

Imperial : Inches and US Letter paper size

Suitable for beginners and up.

Recommended Tools : sewing machine, iron, chalk or dissolvable pen, scissors, large right angle ruler and/or long straight ruler.

Techniques used: button holes, gathers and in-seam pockets.

FABRIC YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS STYLE

-Width: 145cm / 57 inches (can also work for between 135-155 cm / 53 - 61 inches by following additional instructions)

-Usage: 260cm / 102 inches ( approx 2.85 yards)

-Type: Ideal in a woven linen or cotton with a weight of approx 150-200gsm. Choose something with a bit of drape and something that is not too thick as the gathers can add a lot of fullness.

GARMENT MEASUREMENTS

*based on using a fabric that is 145cm / 57 inches wide. You can make this top larger by choosing a fabric with a wider width. This amount is minimal and won’t make any difference to the overall fit of the garment.

    Suggestion for improvement

Posted by Unknown on 2nd Jun 2021

This is a really great pattern and I am happy with the final outcome. But part of the instructions (especially on inseam pockets) is really hard to understand. And hand-drawn illustrations are not very helpful either. The patternmaker has some tutorials on her website but they didn't help me understand some of the processes. I had to watch some video someone else has posted on Youtube to fully understand what I was doing. But I think more detailed instructions should be included in the price, especially as it says for a beginner. I still love this pattern and hugely recommend it to other people but I hope the patternmaker will make more efforts to improve the instructions.

    What a great dress!

Posted by Andi on 24th Feb 2021

I loved making this. Just finished my first ZW dress in a medium weight linen - and I know it is going to be the first of many. I gathered the sleeves on to narrow cuffs and took a lot out of the skirt as I was a bit nervous of the volume, plus I want to be able to use this version as a duster coat in warmer months. I can see lots of possibilities with this pattern - easy to follow instructions and a dress that will always fit ! Ticks all my boxes!

    Wonderful pattern

This is such a great pattern that can easily be adapted. Great for beginners or or advanced dressmakers alike. I'm planning to make this many times and in lots of different fabrics.
