Always wanted to make a shirt but feel intimidated by all the features involved? Join Mercedes for a lovely weekend of sewing and getting to grips with all the elements of sewing a classic shirt for a woman or a man. You can choose the Modern Sewing Co Unisex Shirt or the Closet Core Jenna Shirt. The Unisex Shirt is a classic men’s shirt designed to fit anyone looking for a lean and masculine shirt to wear. The Jenna is an oversized menswear-inspired shirt. 

The pattern is included in the price of the class.

Who is the class for?

Some previous dressmaking experience is advisable and confidence using a sewing machine. 


What will you learn?

- how to take basic measurements
- how to make simple fit adjustments
- how to sew a collar and collar stand
- add a yoke
- how to sew cuffs and placket
- how to sew run and fell seam (on the unisex shirt)
- how to create a patch pocket
- how to sew a standard hem 


Classic collar & collar stand, placket & cuffs, run & fell seam, eased sleeve head, patch pocket & standard hem.

What will you need?


For the Unisex Shirt: 

- Woven fabric. Mid weight cottons in twill or denim weave or a lightweight wool for winter months. 

Fabric width 150cm | Sizes XS2 - M = 140cm | Sizes M - XL3 = 180cm

Fabric width 110cm | Sizes XS2 - M = 190cm | Sizes M - XL3 = 250cm

- 13 small buttons (about 1cm)

- Thread

- 40cm interfacing (woven is best) 


For the Jenna View A longer version: 

58" / 1.50m wide fabric:

Sizes XXS-S = 2 yd (1.8 m), Sizes M-L = 2.25 yd (2 m), Sizes XL-1X = 2.75 yd (2.5 m), Size 2X-4X = 3 yd (2.7 m)


Fabric options:

  • Light to midweight wovens and shirtings.
  • For a crisp, classic shirt, choose structured wovens like poplin, chambray, oxford, broadcloth, and dobby and twill shirtings.
  • For a softer effect, choose linen, Tencel, voile, viscose, silk, or flannel.

- Fusible interfacing 50cm

Mercedes Ferrari-Plumridge

Mercedes was a contestant on series 5 of the Great British Sewing Bee (2019). She lives just outside Brighton with her husband Graham and their two cats, Maggie and Erica. Having worked in IT for over 20 years and serving as a reservist for 13, Mercedes has a passion for all things technical and wants to know the ins and outs and whys of everything.  Mercedes enjoys utilising fabrics from all sources in her sewing projects while using traditional and developing new techniques.  Minimal waste is a target with all her sewing.

Tea, coffee and biscuits/snacks will be available throughout the class. We recommend that you bring lunch with you as there are not many options to purchase lunch nearby.

We have a fridge and microwave here at the studio.



Photographs are sometimes taken during the class for promotion purposes. If you would prefer not to be photographed, please let us know.


About Our Studio

Our Sewing classes are all held in our sunny sewing studio in Brighton & Hove. Our Sewing studio is easily accessible  by train or bus from Brighton. We also have parking on site.
