March 2024

Welcome to your February 2024 Dream Wardrobe

UK SIZES 6-30

I had such wonderful feedback on the quilted gilet I made last year that I decided it was the perfect Dream Wardrobe project for Spring.

Cute gilets are absolutely everywhere at the moment. So many of our favourite brands are selling different versions, but I think it is better to make your own, that way you can hack it exactly how you want.

The perfect layering piece, whether worn over a jumper, tee shirt or pretty blouse. They're a brilliant addition to everyone's spring wardrobe.

About the fabric:

This beautiful Orla quilted fabric in Lilac is exclusively woven for Fabric Godmother in France. It is lightweight and has a thin layer of wadding, giving the fabric some structure but without being too stiff.

I recommend prewashing your fabric to remove any dressing and allow for pre-shrinking. A cool wash will be fine; just make sure the temperature you use to prewash is the temperature at which you plan to wash the final garment. You don't want your final garment to shrink.

For this month's dream wardrobe, you will receive 1 metre of fabric, so you may need to purchase more for some suggestions.

This fabric would also work well for:

Tessuti Esther Shorts

 Tessuti Bailee Shorts

Kylie and the Machine Mule Tote

Megan Nielsen Hovea Jacket size 0-20  or size 14-34

About the pattern:

The Berger Gilet by Atelier Scammit is a firm favourite of mine and the rest of the Fabric Godmother team. Almost half the team has made their own. Usually available in sizes 4-24, the designer has extended the size range by grading up to a size 30, especially for the Dream Wardrobe box.

The Berger is a super versatile pattern with many different views to choose from. In addition to the two possible necklines- crew neck or round- Berger also offers a rounded or straight bottom front, a cap sleeve, a patch pocket and even a gathered lace binding. With this pattern, you will turn your most beautiful fabric scraps into wonders.

I made a sleeveless, rounded-hem version with hacked-bound seams and edges. I also used bias binding to create the ties. (see the sewing notes below to find out how I did this)

Notions required:

Thread – we have included a Matching Ivory thread

Our hacked version includes 7.5m lavender binding - https://www.fabricgodmother.co.uk/cotton-mix-bias-binding-18mm-lavender/

If you use this binding you may want a matching purple thread

The Berger would also look great in:

Dawson Hickory Stripe Denim

Daisy Sherpa Fleece Mauve

Nora Reversible Jacquard

About your gift:

This month, we have the amazing Milward wooden spool holder. Made of sustainable wood, this spool holder can hold 25 spools of thread. It folds down for easy transportation and has slots for wall mounting or can stand on your sewing table. It's perfect for that sewing Spring clean I've been dying to get done!

Zoe's sewing Notes

-mg-4514.jpg

- If you're planning on binding the edges, stay stitch the armholes and neckline as soon as you've cut the pattern pieces out. Handling these raw curved edges might result in them getting stretched out.

-If you want to do the binding hack, just cut one layer - no lining needed

-mg-4493.jpg

-For binding, don't trim the seams, bind each seam edge for Hong Kong binding and then bind the raw edge

- To add ties, cut 4 X 35/40cm lengths of bias tape (or cord, ribbon, braid, twill tape etc.).

- When applying the bias tape, your iron is your best friend to achieve a neat finish.

- Use clips rather than pins when securing the bias binding in place, before topstitching through the two layers.
