Get to know our Pattern-cutting tutor, Pattern Wiz – Geri Li.

Pattern cutting is the art of translating a 2D design on paper into a 3D wearable garment. It seems complicated, but the basics can be learned, and once you have some pattern-cutting skills and some creativity, the fashion world is your oyster.

We sat down with Geri Li, one of our pattern-cutting tutors, to learn more about her background in pattern-cutting, her techniques, and what you can learn from one of her workshops.

What is your pattern-cutting history - where did you study?

I have always loved sewing and making clothes since I was a small child. A memory I am fond of is sitting on the sofa as a kid doing cross stitch with my mum, which I think is where it all began! This led me to study Fashion Design at Nottingham Trent University, where, after my second year, I decided that I wanted to become a pattern cutter. After graduating, I began working in the industry, and over the last 10 years, I saw that there seemed to be gaps in pattern-cutting knowledge when transitioning from graduation to industry. This inspired me to start Pattern Wiz, a unique community where pattern cutters can grow and share their knowledge. I love passing on the art of pattern cutting and inspiring others and their creativity through pattern cutting.

Where have you previously worked?

Victoria Beckham, FFIXXED STUDIOS (in China), Pringle Scotland, Halpern, The Vampires Wife, for my own business 'Pattern Wiz' teaching and mentoring.

What is your approach to teaching?

My approach to teaching is giving you strong foundations so you can go off and be creative. This incorporates a strong focus on understanding the 'why' when it comes to pattern cutting, as then you can translate your knowledge to different areas of pattern cutting and styles whilst problem-solving fit issues that come up. People tell me that I explain pattern cutting in a simple way compared to what they have learnt before, so I guess simplicity would be another one of my other approaches and making you feel safe and at ease in the process by reminding you nothing you do is ever 'wrong', it is all learning and part of the process!

What do you like best about pattern cutting and creating your own clothes?

I find using my hands to work very therapeutic and love seeing an idea or image go from 2D form into 3D form and come to life with fabric choice and trim details. I find this very satisfying! I also enjoy how it challenges you to think creatively, logically and intuitively, which seems to be a combination that my brain loves! Lastly, I have an aversion to fast fashion and really appreciate when a garment is crafted well and fits well. This is a great way to create something you are proud of.

What do you hope someone takes away from your pattern-cutting classes?

I hope that they will feel inspired and empowered to begin experimenting with making their own patterns and leave with a basic understanding of pattern cutting and how it works so that they can begin to create their own clothes, whether that be tracing a garment accurately or making their own block.

We have a fantastic workshop if you want to study with Geri Li. Recreate your top or blouse with Geri Li on November 16th to 17th, and there are still a few places. We also have plenty more classes in the works, so make sure you sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop.
