Sew Your Own Bowl Covers

Posted by Jen Rich on 15th Aug 2023

Jen Rich, the author of STITCH used our Strawberry Fayre Linen and viscose mix to make the most adorable bowl covers.

Follow her instructions below to make your own set of bowl covers.

Bowl covers

Fabric bowl covers are a great alternative to single-use options such as cling film and with only two rows of stitching, they couldn’t be easier to make.

Fabric recommendations: Mediumweight natural fabrics such as cotton, linens or canvas work well here

You will need:

Fabric (for measurements see step 1)

Knitting needle or chopstick

1cm (1/2in) wide elastic (for measurements see step 5)

Matching thread

Safety pin

Hand sewing needle (optional)

1. Draw around your bowl onto the wrong side of the fabric then make a series of dots 4cm (1 1/2in) from this line around the whole circumference. Join the dots to draw a full circle then cut out. Use this piece as a template to cut out another identical circle from your fabric.

2. Pin the fabric right sides together and sew around the edge with a 5mm (1/4in) seam allowance. Leave a gap of around 5cm (2in) in the seam so you can turn it through. If your fabric is on the thicker side you may need to leave a larger gap.

3. Turn the bowl cover right side out through the opening you just left. Use a knitting needle or chopstick to run around the inside of the seam and get a smooth curve then give it a press with the iron. Sew another line of stitches 1.5cm (3/4in) from the edge, backstitching at the beginning and end.

4. Measure the circumference of your bowl then subtract 10cm (4in) and cut this length from your elastic. Attach the safety pin to one end of the elastic and feed it through the channel you have just sewn, until the ends meet. Overlap the ends by 1cm (1/2in) and sew a few lines of stitches across them to secure.

..

5. Press the seam allowance in at the opening you left and pin in place. Sew a line of stitches as close to the edge as possible to close the seam or hand sew using a ladder stitch.

Tip: The covers are reversible so if you want to switch up your design, use a different fabric on each side.
