The Great British Sewing Bee - Series 9 Episode 3

Posted by Phoebe on 9th Jun 2023

It was week three of the Great British Sewing Bee and the ten remaining contestants were celebrating all things West Africa! Patrick and Esme were joined by guest judge Nigerian fashion designer Banke Kuku and the challenges ranged from making traditional garments to sewing with wax print fabric.

We particularly loved the made-to-measure challenge and learning about the boubou. A boubou is a long, often colourful loose fitting garment, worn by men and women in West Africa. An over the head garment, it is often long and flowing, with wide sleeves. Inspired by the concept of the boubou, we've pulled together our favourite loose fitting robes and kaftans for anyone who would love to make an inspired-version of their own.

We love the idea of using bright colours and colour blocking for the boubou, why not try our using a few of our Essie Cotton Poplins for a bold look!
