ABOUT THE DRESS:

The Peony Dress is the dress you have been missing from your wardrobe. Made in a silk or pretty viscose crepe, it’s the perfect special occasion dress, or made in a linen or babycord you can dress it down for daytime. The Peony Dress also features a fantastic couture technique to add shoulder puffs to your dress.

SEWING LEVEL: Intermediate

There are a number of darts in the dress, a concealed zip fastening and optional gathered frills. This dress is designed for an intermediate dressmaker. You should have some experience of sewing garments.

RECOMMENDED FABRICS

Fabrics with a bit of drape such as viscose, crepe, silk and cotton lawn will give a floaty silhouette. You can also use a fabric with more body such as a mid to lightweight denim, cord or cotton poplin which will make it a more structured dress. For the shoulder puffs you can use the main dress fabric or if you want a more dramatic puff, use a double layer of your fabric or add a layer of interfacing into your shoulder puff. If you are using a thick fabric you may want to use a lighter weight fabric for the puffs as you may find it hard to gather.

HOW THE DRESS FITS

The waist seam will sit around 1cm above your natural waist and the skirt gently skims over your hips. The dress is not designed to be closely fitted, however there are darts on both the front and back of the bodice and on the skirt, meaning that you can easily adjust the fit of the dress to your liking. The sleeves are designed so that they start in the centre of your shoulder. This means that the shoulder puff adds height, drama and a sense of standing up tall without making your shoulders broader. It’s our new favourite couture technique! View A has a flattering frill on the sleeves that falls halfway down the forearm, and the frill of the skirt will fall just above the ankles on the lower calf. View B finishes mid-thigh with no frill. The neckline is designed to be high but not feel uncomfortable and shows just a subtle glimpse of your clavicles.

YOU WILL NEED

• Your main fabric

• Fabric for shoulder puffs (see below)

• 25cm (10”) Iron on interfacing

• 56cm (22”) Concealed zip

• Thread

• Sewing machine

• Basic sewing tools

This was a really satisfying sew. Complex enough to give a good, flexible fit but instructions that were still easy to follow. I will definitely make more than 1.

    Peony dress

I've just finished my first of this dress. It wasn't easy for me but I was determined to get past " beginner " status.
I did make few minor mistakes, but none detract from the finished dress.
I did the frilly hem and quite enjoyed that bit, the concealed zip was hard for me but the video did explain it in easy to follow detail, so, I just need more practice! The sleeves weren't too challenging either. I'm a size 14 and it fits perfectly, no alterations needed
I'm going to try another one in the neon orange gingham just arrived from FabricGodmother. Can't wait to get started.

This pattern looks lovely and I've heard so many great reviews for it that I had to buy it. I'm just trying to find the right fabric to do it justice.

    Peony

I really enjoyed making this beautiful dress! I find dresses like this impossible to buy in the shop due to shapes not fitting my body!. I graded this pattern to include size 18 bust/ 22 waist/ 24 hip and shortened the bodice by 2 inches. The result is a beautifully fitting dress that I am so proud of! Instructions were really detailed and the accompanying video guidance was so helpful!! I consider myself an advanced beginner so this was my most challenging make yet with invisible zipper and many darts but the make was achievable given the excellent instructions. One point for fellow beginners - it’s 1.5cm to the zipper teeth not the zipper tape!! I love my Peony and I’m sure this will be the first of many!!!! ??

Pattern simple but efficient to cut out. Pieces quick and easy to sew. Perfect pattern for a last minute bold statement make to wear at a formal event. The instructions whilst clear and easy to follow are washed out by the photos. Looking forward to make more versions of this dress.
