Description

October 18th, 2025 10.00am – 17.00pm

7 hours

In this workshop you'll learn everything you need to know to make your own patchwork quilts. First, you'll be guided through fabrics and material best practice, then you'll learn how to cut fabric for patchwork. Next, you'll practice some patchwork and sew a small sample. Then, you'll prepare and baste your sample into a mini-quilt. You'll hand stitch the quilt using big stitch quilting with cotton sashiko thread. Finally, you'll trim and bind your sample using a combination of machine and hand techniques.

We'll also discuss other kinds of hand and machine quilting. You'll leave with a finished mini-quilt block and all of the skills to tackle your next quilt at home.

Please contact us if you would like to pay in instalments and we can discuss options.

Who is the class for?

This class is suitable for confident beginners upwards. You should be able to use a sewing machine.

What will you learn?

  • How to choose appropriate fabrics for doing patchwork
  • How to cut and prepare fabric for patchwork
  • How to sew strip patchwork and three different block variations
  • How to chain piece on a sewing machine
  • How to layer your quilt for basting
  • Three different methods for basting your quilt
  • How to hand quilt
  • How to make your own binding and bind your finished quilt
You will practice all of these skills on a small sample (around 30 x 30 cm).

What will you need?

  • Fabric. You will need 2-3 fabrics for this project to create your patchwork and to use for the back of your mini quilt sample. We recommend scraps and small pieces of a few fabrics, totalling 1 x 1.5 m (this will give you plenty of choice and room to play).
  • Choose cotton or linen fabrics or other woven, medium weight fabrics. Texture wise, think pillow case or dress shirt, and stay away from anything too slippery.
  • Please PREWASH your fabrics if possible.
  • Matching sewing machine thread for piecing your fabric
  • Sashiko thread for the hand quilting which can be bought here.

What is included?

  • Use of our sewing machines and overlockers
  • Use of a number of high cutting tables
  • Use of any equipment you might need
  • Expert tuition
OTHER MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT: Do you supply or do I supply or do we ask students to supply? Some of these things I think you'll likely have in studio, but just in case. I've added a note to say what I have existing already:

- Quilt ruler or template? (I have x3)
- Rotary cutters (I have x2)
- Sashiko/quilting thread
- Sashiko/hand quilting needles (I usually supply)
- thimbles (I have x10)
- marking tools (I like hera markers but chalk will work)
- Wadding
