The Great British Sewing Bee - Series 8 Episode 10

Posted by Phoebe on 1st Jul 2022

It was the Sewing Bee final on Wednesday and with all four of the semi finalists making it through to the final, it was an exciting episode!

The theme for the final was ‘Party’ and the three challenges included making Esme’s famous Amorphous Dress, creating a party outfit using fabric scraps from previous challenges, and making a show stopping jumpsuit!

The first challenge was to make the Amorphous dress. A figure-hugging dress, designed by Esme and the Swanky Modes in the 60s. This daring dress is created out of one singular pattern piece, in four-way stretch fabric, featuring asymmetric cut outs along one side. Inspired by this challenge, I’ve picked out a few (slightly more wearable) patterns today that are designed for jersey and stretch fabrics – sparkly lycra optional!

Named Kielo Wrap Dress & Jumpsuit

A classic stretch sewing pattern is the Named Clothing Kielo Wrap Dress and Jumpsuit. This pattern has a really interesting wrap detail and looks amazing as a jumpsuit or a dress! It’s a really easy make and can be dress up or down depending on the occasion!

True Bias Nikko Dress & Top

This is fabulous, versatile top and dress pattern. Make it in a soft cotton jersey for a daytime feel, or if you are feeling adventurous you could add cut-outs for a going out look!

kdornbier Morgan Rouched Knit Dress

The Morgan Rouched Knit dress is perfect for that asymmetrical look of the Amorphous dress but without all of the cut outs! The ruching is added by a drawstring tie, which adds interest and detail to this simple dress.

The next challenge was to make a party outfit using scraps of fabrics from previous challenges. I love this challenge and it’s always fun to see how leftover fabrics can be pieced together to make something new!

Megan Nielsen Dove Blouse

Annie made a wonderful V neck top with fabulous wide sleeves. You can recreate this look with the Megan Neilson Dove blouse. A perfect beginner pattern with the option for a statement seventies sleeve.

The final challenge was to make show stopping jumpsuits, suitable for the red carpet! The contestants made a range of jumpsuits and playsuits which we all loved. Inspired by this challenge I’ve chosen some of our favourite jumpsuit patterns to share today.

Papercut Patterns Mirri Jumpsuit

I love the twist detail of the Mirri Jumpsuit and I can imagine this would look amazing sewn up in a party fabric for a special occasion!

Atelier Scämmit Jolie Mome Jumpsuit

A pretty jumpsuit with frill sleeves and a drawstring waist. The Jolie Mome jumpsuit would look beautiful in a satin fabric to give it an evening feel.

Our Lady of Leisure Paloma Jumpsuit

Finally, if you are looking for something more structured. The Paloma Jumpsuit would be perfect for slightly heavier weight stretch cotton sateen fabrics. The fabulous seventies shape would be the perfect look for any party!

Congratulations to Annie on winning the Sewing Bee this year! We've loved watching everyone's journeys and we can't wait to see what they get up to next!
