The Great British Sewing Bee - Series 9 Episode 7

Posted by Phoebe on 10th Jul 2023

It was 90's week on the Great British Sewing Bee and this week the contestants were battling for a place in the quarter finals!

We loved all of the 90's references and how the contestants all drew from their experiences in this decade when creating their garments.

The first challenge was to make a pair of cargo pants - the trend piece of the season! We love the Viki Sews Anne Pants to recreate the look. The Anne pants are semi-fitted casual pants with a straight silhouette. The front features slash pockets as well as patch pockets with flaps topstitched over the side seams, and the back features waist darts. The bottom of the pants features an interesting detail: a buttonhole tab stitched into the inseam which fastens with a button on the front leg. The pockets, flaps, waistband, and hem feature decorative topstitching detail.

For the Made to Measure challenge, contestants had to create a dress, fit for a 90's supermodel. We loved this challenge and were really excited to see lots of inspiration for really wearable dresses. We've picked out a few patterns that would help achieve the look!

Sew Love Patterns - Chloe Dress PDF

We thought the Sew Love Pattern Chloe Dress would be a great starting point to recreate Mia's Velvet Chain Dress. This fitted dress would work so well in velvet and already has a side split. Why not try making the straps thinner or add some chains for the full effect!

True Bias Nikko Dress

The True Bias Nikko Dress looks like it could be the exact pattern that Tony used for his dramatic split colour dress. This jersey dress has long sleeves, a side split and high neck. Simply draw a line right across the pattern pieces and cut in half, then add seam allowance to this cut, and you can recreate this version! A great dress to take you from day-to-night.

Tessuti Sade Slip Dress - PDF

Re-create Lizzie's rock 'n' roll dress with the Tessuti Sadie Slip Dress. This slip dress is bias cut, features spaghetti straps and is perfect for lame, satin and other slinky fabrics. It would be the perfect pairing for our Joan Metallic Viscose Satin - Dusky Rose!

Finally, if you loved Lauren's slinky cowl neck dress then look no further than the Sewing Patterns by Masin Sicily Slip Dress. Another bias cut dress with spaghetti straps, this dress also features a cowl neck and looks very similar to the version that Lauren made!

This slip dress would be the perfect pairing to our Marilyn Heavy Viscose Satin. Available in a variety of colours - it has a lovely heavy weight and fluid drape, perfect for bias cut styles.

Hopefully this has inspired you to take some inspiration from the 90s!
